Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
